About My Work:Scientist Photo 2

My field of study is: Schizophrenia - more specifically: Social Cognition in Schizophrenia

I enjoy this because: I enjoy doing research with people with schizophrenia because it allows me to interact with the patients and understand their reality, which is very enriching. My objective is to study the neural social cognitive mechanisms in schizophrenia, especially empathy, and create treatment interventions to help them overcome their deficits. I believe that social cognition is closely related to social functioning, and therefore I believe that that if we help to improve the first, the latter will also increase and so their quality of life. I think that the work we do, even if it seems that is a small piece of the cake it is very meaningful.

I am currently working on: Study of Social Cognition in patients with schizophrenia during simulated social interactions using fMRI and ERPs. Study of Cognitive Training and Enhanced Supported Employment in patients with schizophrenia.

More About Me:

Right Handed or Left Handed: I am VERY left handed, which makes me a non eligible candidate for most of the studies we are running here at the lab. Definitely I wouldn’t get rich participating in research studies as a healthy control.

What is your favorite word? Coffee (I can’t say anything else in the morning until I have one. My neurons don’t start working until I had at least one)

What place in the world would you most like to visit? Japan (for several reasons, I like their food, their fantasy and creativity and their culture)

Do you have any nicknames? Silvy or Silvieta

What was the last song that played on your iPod? My Doorbell (The White Stripes). I love pure rock.

Favorite TV show: La Riera (Catalan Show, from Catalan TV, TV3, Barcelona) It’s a classic soap-opera; I am totally hooked on it.

Desk: messy or organized? I start the day with my desk organized and ends up messy.

How many languages can you speak and what are they? Three languages: Catalan (my native language from Catalunya) Spanish (I bet you know this one) English (this one too…) However, when I am very tired I can mix them without realizing….

Do you play any instruments? Piano and air guitar.

Your Perfect Pizza: I am a vegan. So I just eat home-made pizza….which I make and it’s delicious. I like them very simple, with fresh and simple ingredients.

If I was not doing what I am doing today, I might be working as: This is a good question. I might be working as a physician, or a veterinarian.

Here is what I'd like to share with the world: I believe that people with mental illness in addition to fight their illnesses have to struggle with the social stigma. I would encourage everybody to start opening their hearts to them and treat mental illnesses as any other physical illness.
